HISTORIA

Janet van Dyne era una rica heredera hija del mundialmente conocido Vernon Van Dyne. En cierta ocasión, acompañaría a su padre a visitar al célebre bioquímico Henry Pym para preguntarle si quería colaborar en un proyecto para detectar señales de vida inteligente en el espacio, empleando rayos gamma. Pym declinaría esta oferta por estar muy alejada de su campo. Al conocer a Henry Pym, Janet, inmediatamente se enamoró de él y el hecho de que esta se pareciera enormemente a la fallecida esposa del científico permitió que iniciaran una relación sentimental.

Van Dyne siguió adelante con su proyecto y varios días después consiguió lanzar un rayo a través del hiperespacio, conectando con el planeta habitado por los Kosmosianos, una raza inteligente no humanoide. Pilar, un criminal de ese mundo, aprovecharía el rayo para teleportarse a nuestro planeta y así evadir a la justicia de su mundo. A su llegada mataría a Van Dyne para deshacerse de un testigo molesto que pudiera comunicarse con sus perseguidores, escapando luego para asolar la ciudad. Janet descubriría el cadáver de su padre y, no sabiendo que hacer, pediría ayuda a Henry Pym.

Este iría a investigar la situación en su identidad de Hombre Hormiga y, conmovido por la entereza de Janet y su deseo de vengar a su padre, le indicaría que contactara con Pym. Cuando Janet afirmó que no solo quería vengar a su padre sino, también, dedicar el resto de su vida a luchar contra el crimen y la injusticia, Pym le revelaría su identidad secreta, proponiéndole someterse a cierta operación que la transformaría en un ser sobrehumano demás de su acompañante en la lucha contra el mal, aceptó encantada.

Basándose en sus recientes experimentos sobre las avispas, Pym le injertaría unas células insectoides tratadas genéticamente en la espalda y la frente. A continuación, le enseñaría a utilizar las partículas Pym que había descubierto lo que le proporcionó el método para disminuir de tamaño y volver de nuevo a su estatura normal. Al encogerse, le brotaron alas de avispa de la espalda y antenas en la frente que le permitían comunicarse con los insectos. Tras enfundarse un traje especial que le proporcionaría Henry, los dos iniciarían su carrera superheroica con la identidad de Hombre Hormiga y la Avispa. La primera misión de la pareja consistiría en buscar al criminal extraterrestre. Poco antes de su enfrentamiento con el asesino de su padre, Janet confesaría a su nuevo amigo que se estaba enamorando de él. Pym, a pesar de ser emocionalmente más inhibido, también se estaba enamorando de ella.

Durante una de sus andanzas, el Hombre Hormiga y La avispa se unieron a Iron Man y Thor con la intención de atrapar a Hulk, convertido en un peón involuntario de Loki. Una vez capturado el villano, el Hombre Hormiga sugeriría que podían agruparse de forma continuada para luchar contra el crimen. Todos aceptaron la sugerencia y fue la Avispa quién bautizaría al nuevo grupo, fundándose así Los Vengadores.

Pym conseguiría contener las partículas Pym en unas cápsulas especiales que tanto él como Janet podían ingerir cuando hiciera falta, incluyendo unas que le permitían alcanzar hasta los seis metros de altura. Pero tantos cambios de tamaño estaban afectando negativamente a su metabolismo y decidió retirarse de la lucha contra el crimen por considerarla cada vez más peligrosa. Janet accedería a retirarse con él y ambos abandonarían públicamente los Vengadores.

Tiempo después, Henry Pym y Janet van Dyne descubrieron que Namor se dirigía a la ciudad de Nueva York y decidieron alertar a los Vengadores, con tan mala fortuna que Janet fue hecha prisionera por Attuma y el Coleccionista. Para poder ayudar a sus compañeros a rescatarla, Pym se pondría un nuevo traje y adoptaría la identidad de Goliat. Por aquel entonces, sus cuerpos habían asimilado las partículas Pym y podían cambiar de tamaño a voluntad. Una vez rescatada la Avispa decidirían seguir en los Vengadores.

Meses después, habiendo cumplido los 23 años, Jan heredaría la fortuna de su padre como estipulaba su testamento y por lo tanto pasaría a ser económicamente independiente {A 43}. Ello no le impediría desarrollar diversas actividades, como podían ser la de diseñadora de modas. Tanto ella como Henry permanecieron durante todo este tiempo en los Vengadores. Pese a llevaban años de relación, la naturaleza introvertida de Henry Pym le impediría declararse a Janet. Mientras se hallaba trabajando en el laboratorio, rompería accidentalmente unas probetas conteniendo diversos productos. Los gases resultantes de la mezcla de dichos productos producirían un cambio radical aunque temporal en la personalidad de Pym. Asumiendo la identidad de Chaqueta Amarilla, afirmó haber matado a Henry Pym, raptó a la Avispa y le propuso matrimonio, cosa que Pym siempre había querido hacer. Janet, dándose cuenta de su verdadera identidad, aceptó temiendo que su estado empeorase si se negaba y terminaron casándose. Durante la celebración de la boda, que tendría lugar en la Mansión de los Vengadores, fueron atacados por el Jefe de Pista y su Circo del Crimen. El ver a Janet en peligro tuvo el efecto de devolver a Pym a la normalidad.

Ya casado con Janet, ambos decidieron dejar las cosas como estaban pues la boda seguía siendo valida. A raíz de esto, Pym decidió continuar con su identidad de Chaqueta Amarilla, dado que los cambios de tamaño afectaban negativamente a su cuerpo. Janet continuaría adelante con la empresa de su padre y con su carrera de diseñadora de modas, sin darse cuenta de que su éxito en ambas carreras y el proporcionar la mayor parte de los ingresos del matrimonio estaban afectando negativamente a su esposo. Con el paso el tiempo la estabilidad mental de Henry, quien había llegado a crear a Ultrón, se fue malogrando e inició una crisis de identidad que se veía reflejada en el cambio continuo de identidad superheroica. Esto le llevo a sufrir diversos periodos de depresión, llegando a considerarse un fracaso como científico al medir sus logros según un listón imposiblemente elevado. A la larga el matrimonio entre ambos se acabaría resintiendo gravemente. El juicio de Pym acabaría deteriorándose, provocando discusiones en casa e incluso llegando a actuar imprudentemente cuando ejercía como vengador.

El asunto llegó a su máxima degradación cuando Henry, sometido a una corte marcial por parte de los Vengadores acusado de imprudencia, construyó a Salvación-1, un androide de adamantium, para que atacara a los Vengadores y así destruirlo él mismo con la intención de mejorar su imagen ante el grupo. Cuando Janet descubrió lo que esta haciendo su marido, Henry le pegó. Sin embargo, sería ella quién salvaría al grupo derrotando al robot. Pym sería expulsado del grupo y Janet, dolida e incapaz de soportar más el estado de su matrimonio, se divorciaría dando por terminada la relación entre ellos. Con el fin de tranquilizarse y recuperarse de su fallida relación, decidió dejar el grupo.

Janet, ya divorciada, iniciaría unas breves relaciones románticas con Tony Stark y Paladín en un intento de olvidar a su ex-marido, pero no prosperaron, de modo que decidió volcarse en su nuevo rol dentro de los Vengadores. Aunque hasta la fecha Jan no había demostrado cualidades de mando, posiblemente debido a la presión de su matrimonio y al rol secundario que desempeñaba en el mismo, como Avispa asumió el liderazgo de los Vengadores de la Costa Este. Jan demostró estar más que capacitada para esa responsabilidad, aunque dimitió tras el asalto a la mansión por parte de los Amos del Mal.

Se unió al equipo oeste y se reconcilió con su ex-marido, aunque dejaría su puesto para trabajar en Hollywood. Posteriormente la Avispa perdió sus poderes, tiempo después fue herida por el Iron Man dominado por Inmortus en la Encrucijada y para salvarla Pym la convirtió en un insectoide. La Avispa, como todos los Vengadores se dio por muerta al viajar al universo de bolsillo de Franklin Richards, y, cuando regresó, adquirió su aspecto normal y se reconcilió con su ex-marido Henry. La Avispa regresó a los Vengadores poco después, cambiando su estructura y liderándoles en la guerra contra Kang.

Sin quererlo, Janet fue el desencadenante de la locura de la Bruja Escarlata cuando le mencionó sin querer los hijos que había tenido su compañera al comentarle que tenía miedo a quedarse embarazada. Los recuerdos de los hijos de Wanda habían sido suprimidos de su memoria por Agatha Harkness y el volver a recordarlos desató su poder al estar atravesando un periodo de gran inestabilidad emocional y un incremento cada vez más acentuado de sus poderes. Durante el ataque a la Mansión de los Vengadores por parte de la Bruja Escarlata, la Avispa cayó en coma al ser golpeada por Hulka. Henry estuvo junto a su ex-mujer mientras ésta se recuperaba de las heridas en el hospital, lo que propició que se reconciliaran y la pareja se trasladó a Oxford. Estaba claro que la pareja no podía volver a funcionar. Cuando Henry inició una serie de conferencias, Janet se aburría extraordinariamente y decidió empezar a salir por su cuenta, lo que los llevó a discutir de nuevo. La relación se fue completamente a pique cuando pilló a su ex-marido manteniendo una relación con una joven estudiante, ignorando en realidad que se trataba de la skrull Criti Noll.

Durante el transcurso de la Guerra Civil entre héroes, Janet se unió al bando que apoyaba el Acta de Registro Superhumano, aunque la muerte de Goliat le causó un gran malestar. Nada más terminar el combate con la rendición del Capitán América, Janet se unió a los Poderosos Vengadores, la nueva encarnación del grupo leal a la Iniciativa de los 50 Estados, en oposición a los clandestinos Nuevos Vengadores. Tras combatir la amenaza de Ultrón, el grupo tuvo que hacer frente a una invasión de simbiontes. Para la ocasión Chaqueta Amarilla le proporcionó una nueva fórmula de crecimiento que le permitía aumentar de tamaño sin padecer efectos secundarios.

Finalmente la Invasión Secreta que los skrulls habían estado desarrollando llegó a su apogeo y lanzaron un ataque a gran escala por todo el mundo. Tras creer que la Reina Veranke había muerto, Criti Noll activó el arma biológica en la que había convertido a la Avispa al entregarle la nueva fórmula de crecimiento. Janet empezó a crecer de tamaño descontroladamente mientras emitía una luz púrpura indicando que estaba a punto de estallar. Pero Thor terminó con su vida para evitar que estallara.

Tras la supuesta muerte de Janet, Henry Pym decidió adoptar la identidad de Avispa en su recuerdo. Además durante largo tiempo creyó que el cuerpo de su ex-esposa se había expandido y construyó la Mansión Infinita para intentar reagruparlo de nuevo, pero su teoría demostró ser falsa.

En realidad, Janet sí que había sobrevivido, pero había ocurrido todo lo contrario, se había contraido hasta ser arrastrada al Microverso. Ahí estuvo combatiendo a Lord Gouzar hasta que pudo usar una Tarjeta de los Vengadores para contactar con sus compañeros. Los Vengadores viajaron hasta el Microverso y le ayudaron a derrotar al tirano. Tras su regreso se unió al Equipo Unidad de los Vengadores e inició un romance con Kaos.

En su tamaño normal posee la fuerza normal para una mujer de su edad, peso y constitución reforzada por ejercicios físicos regulares. Sin embargo, su fuerza se incrementa a medida que se encoge, pudiendo doblar una barra de acero de cinco centímetros de diámetro cuando tiene una altura de treinta centímetros.

Poderes conocidos:

La Avispa es capaz de reducir su tamaño hasta alcanzar el de una avispa corriente. La fuente de su poder es un peculiar tipo de partículas subatómicas descubiertas por Henry Pym, cuya naturaleza exacta es desconocida pero cuyas propiedades y comportamiento pueden determinarse. Al principio, para poder reducir su tamaño, debía exponerse a un gas que contenía partículas Pym en suspensión, o ingerir una cápsula conteniendo dichas partículas. Las Partículas Pym interactúan con los impulsos eléctricos de su cerebro para crear un campo reductor que la Avispa puede controlar mentalmente. Para crecer, también debía exponerse a otro tipo de Partículas Pym, pero la sucesiva exposición a hecho que la Avispa pueda generar campos reductores o ampliadores cada vez que lo desee, sin tener que recurrir a una nueva exposición a las Partículas Pym. Se desconoce durante cuanto tiempo puede permanecer en estado reducido.
Cuando la Avispa reduce su tamaño, su masa no se comprime en su estatura reducida, sino que se proyecta de forma desconocida a una dimensión extrafísica, de donde la reclama cuando vuelve a aumentar de tamaño. Debido a una modificación realizada por Henry Pym, su fuerza aumenta de manera inversamente proporcional al tamaño que tiene. También, a consecuencia de esta modificación, puede detener el proceso de reducción al tamaño que quiera, sin tener que seguir encogiéndose hasta el tamaño de avispa. Esto ha sido posible gracias a que su cuerpo se ha adaptado mejor al proceso reductor que el de Henry Pym, quizá por haberse limitado a un tipo determinado de partículas distinto del que permitió a Pym alcanzar su estatura de Hombre Gigante o de Goliat.
Henry Pym realizó unos implantes en las sienes de Janet de células insectoides manipuladas genéticamente que hacen que le crezcan antenas cuando reduce su tamaño. Las antenas le permitían comunicarse telepáticamente con insectos como las hormigas, de manera similar a la que lo hacía el propio Hombre hormiga con su casco cibernético. De cualquier forma, estas células en concreto se marchitaron y murieron, haciendo que a la Avispa no le crecieran más antenas después de sus primeras aventuras.
También implantaría estas células especialmente tratadas en sus omóplatos, permitiendo que al reducirse le crecieran alas y, aunque originalmente desaparecían bajo una pequeña callosidad en la espalda al recuperar su tamaño real (al igual que sucedía con las antenas), en la actualidad, debido a la multiplicación de dichas células, puede conservarlas hasta casi alcanzar su estatura normal (se le ha visto mantenerlas con una estatura de más de más de 1,30 metros). Cuando esto ocurre, las alas crecen en la misma proporción que el resto de su cuerpo. Estas alas han sido ancladas a una serie de anillos de soporte, haciendo las funciones de ligamentos artificiales, emplazados en su columna vertebral y sus costillas. Los citados anillos están compuestos de moléculas inestables inertes, capaces de expandirse o contraerse cuando sea necesario.
La avispa puede utilizar estas alas para volar. Son suficientemente fuertes como para sostenerla en el aire incluso cuando su estatura ha alcanzado 1,30 metros. Con ellas, la Avispa puede alcanzar velocidades de más de 61 Km./h durante más de una hora antes de cansarse apreciablemente (cuanto más pequeña se hace, más energía emplea para alcanzar dichas velocidades. Sin embargo, dado que se hace más fuerte según se encoge, dicha fuerza le permite mantener esa velocidad durante el mismo tiempo incluso a su tamaño más reducido).Estas alas le permiten una gran maniobrabilidad, muy semejante a la del insecto del que adopto el nombre, pudiendo planear, hacer picados y contrapicados. Gracias al intensivo entrenamiento seguido, puede incluso volar del revés.
Henry Pym también modificaría sus poderes para que la cantidad de bioelectricidad que generase su cuerpo aumentara cuanto más reducido fuera cuerpo y manipuló su “aguijón” de Avispa para que aprovechase esta energía. No obstante, se le ha visto proyectando estos rayos de bioelectricidad sin necesidad de utilizar los “aguijones” (por ejemplo cuando no llevaba más que un bañador). Se desconoce la cantidad precisa de bioelectricidad que podía llegar a generar, pero en todo caso proyectaba descargas lo bastante potentes como para abrir un agujero de treinta centímetros en una pared de cemento, causar un agudo dolor a seres sobrehumanos o dejar inconsciente a un ser humano corriente.

Habilidades Especiales:

Gracias a su entrenamiento con los Vengadores, tiene capacidades atléticas por encima de la media y es una buena combatiente cuerpo a cuerpo. También ha demostrado tener aptitudes para la jefatura y la estrategia.

Parafernalia:

La Avispa incorpora moléculas inestables en su vestimenta e incluso en sus joyas para que se encojan o aumenten de tamaño junto con ella.

Armas:

Originalmente, la Avispa llevaba armas gemelas en cada muñeca consistentes en proyectores de aire comprimido que disparaban pequeñas agujas. Luego fueron convertidos en proyectores de fuerza que aprovechaban la bioelectricidad generada por su cuerpo. Estos dispositivos usaban una serie de transformadores neurónicos de frecuencias para amplificar el campo de energía propio del sistema nervioso convirtiéndolo en un rayo “aguijón” de alta frecuencia. La tecnología exacta que se usaba para conseguirlo es desconocida. Los aguijones podían manifestarse en forma de un rayo continuo o en forma de una serie de breves descargas de fuerza conmocionadora concentradas en una área de menos de siete centímetros cuadrados del objetivo apuntado. Las última versión del aguijón de la avispa, cuando se proyectaba de manera continuada, podía ejercer una presión de algo más de 5 kilogramos por centímetro cuadrado, suficiente para aturdir y paralizar temporalmente a una persona de tamaño medio.
Con el tiempo fue capaz de proyectar las descargas bioeléctricas sin necesidad de ayudas y dejo de llevar constantemente su “aguijón de avispa”.

Marvel Zombies

Janet es uno de los primeros héroes en ser infectados y aparentemente es responsable de la infección de su esposo Hank. Después de que los héroes zombificados terminan por devorar a casi toda la población del universo Marvel, Janet descubre muy molesta que Hank se encontraba usando el cuerpo de Pantera Negra como suministro de alimento y trata de delatarlo a los demás. Hank la detiene, decapitándola y deja el laboratorio, ignorando que su esposa de hecho sobrevivió. Pantera Negra recoge la cabeza decapitada de Janet y se la lleva al Asteroide M. Cuarenta años después de que la infección zombi azotara la tierra, Janet regresa al planeta junto a Pantera Negra, adherida a un cuerpo robótico y con un control sobre su hambre por la carne humana.
