HISTORIA

Frank Castle era un Capitán del Cuerpo de Marines de los Estados Unidos de América. Había sido condecorado por su servicio en el conflicto de Vietnam durante cinco años. Vivía felizmente casado y con dos hijos. Todo le iba bien hasta que un fatídico día en Central Park él y su familia fueron testigos inesperados de un ajuste de cuentas por parte de la mafia. No podía haber testigos por lo que Frank Castle y su familia cayeron abatidos. Pero Castle no murió. Tuvo que soportar el peso de la perdida de su esposa y sus dos hijos. Reclamó justicia pero no se la fue dada. En ese momento Frank Castle murió para dar paso al Castigador. Una particular visión del alma oscura de aquel hombre roto cuya única intención era la venganza.

Basándose en la información obtenida por el detective John Laviano, el Castigador pudo saber que el causante de la muerte de su familia había sido un miembro de una familia mafiosa. Un tipo llamado Bruno Costa. El Castigador utilizó todos los conocimientos militares que poseía del pasado, y armado con un arsenal y su propia rabia estableció el viejo criterio de ojo por ojo y diente por diente, acabando con toda la familia Costa. Seria en este acontecimiento donde Castle se encontraría con uno de sus enemigos más tediosos, el llamado Puzzle.

Fue ahí donde empezó la carrera contra el crimen de Frank Castle. Ya había acabado con aquellos que habían destrozado su vida, pero seguían quedando más culpables y alguien tenía que hacerse cargo de ello.

Y en estos inicios fue engañado por Chacal, que convenció al Castigador para que acabara con Spiderman haciéndole creer que Spiderman era un villano. El justiciero armado había hecho su aparición en las calles de Nueva York y los otros defensores de los débiles tenían que estar alerta.

A partir de ese momento el Castigador se dedicó a ir estableciendo su propio principio de justicia. Bajo el lema de “Si eres culpable estas muerto” fue acabando con traficantes, mafiosos, grupos organizados, se involucró en asuntos con el Mossad, con la mafia china, etc.

Como era de esperar, Frank fue encarcelado en la Isla Prisión de Ryker. Donde volvió a toparse con Puzzle y otros enemigos. Frank pudo escapar pero debido al efecto de una droga convirtió su guerra personal en una absurda cruzada, abriendo fuego contra cualquiera que rompiera una regla.

Una vez recuperado siguió combatiendo el crimen, asociándose de vez en cuando con algunos de los Superheroes de a pie que protegen Nueva York, aunque a menudo el Castigador ha salido de la ciudad para aplicar su ley a quien lo mereciera.

Su guerra fue degenerando lo suficiente como para llegar a infiltrarse en familias de mafiosos para poder moverse dentro de su terreno y facilitar así su guerra. Se le llegó a creer muerto cuando reunió a gran cantidad de mafiosos en un edificio que voló por los aires e incluso se había creado una división policial (L.I.G.I.V.) para intentar pararle los pies. Aquello estaba empezando a irse de las manos del justiciero. Linus “Microchip” Lieberman que tras años de amistad, colaboración y sufrir la pérdida de su hijo por la causa de Frank, llegó a oponerse a los métodos de castigo.

La guerra se estaba saliendo de madre y SHIELD se metió por medio. Esos futuros enfrentamientos no trajeron más que el encarcelamiento del Castigador a manos del Coronel Furia previa muerte de Microchip en un tiroteo entre Frank y el agente Muerte Súbita.

Durante esa etapa de prisión Frank sufrió un lavado de cerebro que le llevo a sostener la idea de que Nick Furia estaba relacionado con la muerte de su familia. Más concretamente, Nick Furia había sido el asesino de su familia. Tras el periodo de encarcelamiento por el asesinato de Furia, e influenciado por el mercenario Bullseye, Frank fue sentenciado a la muerte en la silla eléctrica, de la cual pudo escapar gracias a la intervención de la familia criminal Geraci. Al poco tiempo Frank ingresó en la familia con la idea de continuar con su guerra personal (como ya había hecho anteriormente con la familia Carbone).

Y así fue porque en un acto de traición del Don de la familia Geraci, viejos enemigos de Frank acabaron con la familia al completo. Frank pudo salvarse y su venganza se saldo con la muerte de Puzzle y Lápida.

En lo que se conoció como la “Época Onslaught”, Frank ayudó al agente de SHIELD George Washington Bridge en la evacuación del Helitransporte y colaboró con ellos como una “deuda personal” por haber matado a Nick Furia. Más tarde en medio de todo ese caos, sufrió de amnesia a causa de la destrucción de la base del Frente de Liberación Mutante. Unos recuerdos que no tardó mucho tiempo en recuperar, para volver a combatir el crimen teniendo como punto de mira a la familia Ma Gnucci.

El Castigador es un veterano combatiente, de recursos excepcionales, entrenado para actuar en tierra, mar y aire, experto en demolición submarina e incursiones en territorio enemigo. Muy familiarizado con toda clase de equipo y combate cuerpo a cuerpo. Pertrechado unicamente con armas convencionales y motivado por su fanático odio hacia los criminales. El Castigador es capaz de luchar contra una docena de enemigos bien armados y experimentados y escapar ileso del ataque.

Transporte:

El Castigador solía viajar en un furgón blindado de chasis modificado, camuflado como un vehículo comercial. Este arsenal movil y puesto de mando, estaba protegido por una carrocería que podía repeler balas blindadas del calibre 30. Estaba equipada con neumáticos especiales a prueba de reventones y un tanque de gasolina -tambien blindado- con capacidad para 200 litros, suspensión independiente y era capaz de alcanzar una velocidad máxima de 270 Km/h. El cristal trasero podía detener balas del calibre 50. La transmisión de las ruedas estaba alimentada electricamente y le permitía pasar por encima de otros vehículos. El furgón estaba equipado con sofisticados aparatos de escucha, capaces de captar la frecuencia de la policía y una computadora que le servía para coordinar todas sus actividades y el archivo de su Diario de Guerra. Por último estaba equipado con una bomba térmica accionable por control remoto que era capz de incinerar el vehículo en 15 minutos.

Armas:

El Castigador emplea un arsenal de armas portátiles. las más utilizadas son un rifle automático M-16 -el más empleado en Vietnam-; Un Sterling Mark-6, 9mm., un semiautomático convertible; una pistola automática Browning Llama de 9 mm.; una automática calibre 45, reformada para munición de 9 mm.; y una Derringer de 4 disparos. A veces, también lleva un Smith & Wesson 357, en lugar de la Browning Llama. También suele añadir una Biachi de tiro rápido en su cinto y una cartuchera bajo el sobaco para su Browning reformada. La Derringer suele esconderla en varias partes de su cuerpo. Hay que añadir varias granadas de fragmentación M-26 y varias de gas lacrimógeno, especialmente diseñadas por él. En su costado derecho, suele llevar un cuchillo de combate Gerber Mark II o un cuchillo de marine.

Videojuegos

  • Ha sido también protagonista de varios videojuegos, siendo uno de ellos The Punisher – Arcade Game, un arcade de Capcom en la línea de Double Dragon, donde el jugador podía escoger entre Punisher o Nick Furia. Apareció en máquinas recreativas y en Mega Drive.
  • También salió The Punisher para Amiga y PC, donde se incluían tres modos distintos de juego: conducir la furgoneta (Battle Van) de Punisher, armado y a pie o buceando. La Game Boy también tuvo su juego de Punisher e incluía un cameo de Spider-Man. El enemigo que había que derrotar al final para concluir con éxito en todos estos juegos era Kingpin, excepto en la versión de Game Boy, donde era Jigsaw (o Puzzle).
  • A su vez, Punisher hizo un cameo en el juego de Spider-Man para Playstation del año 2000: Frank Castle buscaba a Spider-Man, pero es este quien termina encontrándolo y guiándole hasta el almacén donde Spider-Man debe detener el proceso de clonación del simbionte de Venom.
  • En 2005 apareció la nueva versión para PC a manos de Volition Games contratados por THQ. Aquí aparecían otros superhéroes de Marvel, como Iron Man, Black Widow, Daredevil y Nick Furia, y enemigos conocidos de Punisher como Kingpin, Bushwracker, Ma Gnucci, entre otros. El hilo argumental del juego fue desarrollado por el guionista de cómics Garth Ennis.
  • También existe una versión para PlayStation 2, al parecer basada en la película de 2004 (esto se puede concluir por la aparición de un nivel donde el jugador tiene que vencer al ruso en el apartamento de Frank Castle tal y como la película), y donde el enemigo final es Jigsaw. La novedad de este juego es que en los diferentes niveles, en el ambiente del mismo, hay zonas para obtener información de los mafiosos mediante la tortura (como un estanque donde hay pirañas o una mesa donde, encima, hay cuchillos colgando), además de zonas donde se pueden matar a oponentes de manera «especial» (por ejemplo, lanzándolos contra uno de los colmillos de la cabeza trofeo de un elefante o lanzándolos desde un piso a gran altura).
  • Aparece en el juego Marvel Avengers Alliance, como un personaje desbloqueable, con un costo de 135 puntos de comando.

Películas

  • En 1989 Dolph Lundgren protagonizó la primera adaptación cinematográfica del personaje, dirigida por Mark Goldblatt (editor de X-Men: The Last Stand), llamada The Punisher. En esta, sin embargo, no mostraba la gran calavera blanca que caracteriza a Punisher. Dicha calavera aparecía en varios cuchillos que utilizaba como armas. En el mercado español se estrenó en 1990 con el título de El Vengador. En la película, Punisher es un exoficial de policía que lleva tiempo eliminando toda clase de criminales para vengar la muerte de su familia (mediante un flashback se explica el asesinato de su mujer e hijas, víctimas de un coche bomba). Louis Gossett, Jr. encarna el papel del policía que intenta detener su cruzada contra la delincuencia.

  • En el 2004 se produjo la película The Punisher dirigida por Jonathan Hensleigh (guionista de Die Hard: With a Vengeance) con Thomas Jane en el papel de Frank Castle y John Travolta como Howard Saint, antagonista y villano de esta adaptación. El origen del personaje se vuelva a cambiar: Frank Castle es un agente del FBI que mata a uno de los hijos de Howard Saint, este criminal busca venganza y mata a toda la familia de Frank: abuelos, sobrinos, primos, mujer e hijo incluidos. Este sobrevive y busca castigo.

  • El 5 de diciembre del 2008 se estrenó una nueva adaptación, Punisher: War Zone, dirigida por Lexi Alexander y protagonizada por Ray Stevenson. En esta ocasión, Dominic West hace el papel de villano. Si la película del 2004 se basaba, en parte, en la serie de cómics protagonizados por el personaje dentro del sello editorial Marvel Knigths, esta nueva se inspira en los publicados dentro de la línea editorial Max (dirigida a un público adulto). Retrata a Punisher de una forma mucho más cercana al personaje del cómic, con escenas violentas mucho más explícitas que sus predecesoras. En España se titula The Punisher 2: Zona de Guerra. No pasó por la gran pantalla, sino que salió directamente a la venta en DVD y Blu-Ray a partir del 23 de junio de 2009.

Televisión

  • Punisher también ha aparecido en diversas series de televisión de otros populares personajes de Marvel Comics, tres de estas apariciones fueron en la serie de televisión Spider-Man (serie de televisión de 1994) con la voz de John Beck, en los episodios 7 y 8 de la segunda temporada, y más tarde en el episodio 8 de la cuarta temporada. Debido a los requisitos de programación infantil, Punisher se limitó a la utilización de armas no letales.

  • En X-Men (serie de televisión) de 1992 apareció por primera vez en el capítulo 11 de la primera temporada, titulado «Días del futuro pasado (Parte 1)», donde el mutante Bishop regresa al pasado. Punisher aparece también en El escuadrón de superhéroes en el episodio 9 bajo el nombre de «Noche en el Sanctorium» con la voz de Ray Stevenson. Él aparece en su camioneta en la que está dejando al escuadrón quedarse otra vez hasta que puedan encontrar un nuevo lugar para quedarse. Mientras va conduciendo, le habla al escuadrón con un discurso acerca de cómo los criminales son como las «coles de Bruselas» y las personas inocentes son como «macarrones con queso», y cómo los brotes arruinan toda la comida. Se inicia el equipo cuando por accidente partió sus armas causando a todos una descarga dentro de la furgoneta (en el que ni siquiera se preocupó mientras todos los demás entraban en pánico).
  • En Los Vengadores: Los Héroes más poderosos del planeta en el minisodio 13 titulado «Entra al torbellino», Punisher tiene una mención por un taxista que está leyendo un artículo de periódico que dice «Justiciero “castiga” de nuevo» y una foto del logo de la calavera de Punisher.
  • En Avengers Assemble, en el episodio 15 “Planeta Doom”. Aparece de su escondite por las ordenes de Black Widow conocida como Black Bride.
